Original 106fm is an independent radio station broadcasting to Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. It was awarded its broadcast licence (the last new FM licence to be issued by Ofcom) in January 2007 and the station launched on October 28th, 2007 at 1.06pm. The first record played was "Revolution" by The Beatles. Original 106 broadcasts an Adult Oriented format and is on air 24 hours-a-day. 100% of programming is produced locally at their studio complex on Aberdeen's Craigshaw Road. Two FM transmitters are presently in operation, one main transmitter situated at Durris, and a relay covering north Aberdeen. A third transmitter, a relay for Peterhead and Buchan will be switched on during 2008. A high quality UK-wide internet audio stream is available from the station website.

Original 106 plays a mix of hit singles and album tracks from a full range of adult orientated genres including rock, pop, soul from the 60s to today. Among the wide breadth of artists are everything from Razorlight, Oasis, Beatles, Coldplay, Deacon Blue & Green Day to Mika, The Feeling, Newton Faulkner, Elton John and Beverley Knight. Specialist music programmes complement the main music mix, in the form of themed night-time shows:
"The Sunday Showcase", is a locally-focused arts, music and entertainment show featuring new music, local bands, theatre, comedy, television, literature, interviews, discussions etc.
Original 106 is in a unique position in the North East of Scotland, being the only radio station to broadcast hourly round-the-clock news bulletins from Aberdeen, covering local, national and international news. Bulletins are five minutes in duration between 7am and 6pm, three minutes at other times. There is an extended ten minute news briefing at 6am on weekday mornings, and the flagship news magazine "Original Tonight" is on weekday afternoons at 5.30pm. During breakfast and drivetime, there are news headlines at twenty past and twenty to the hour. Sports news is covered in each hourly bulletin and there are comprehensive sports round-ups at 9.30am and during "Original Tonight".
Traffic and Travel bullitens are broadcast every twenty minutes during peak travel periods.
Neil Metcalf is head of news, journalists include Emma Pettis and Fraser Morrison. Dave Galloway is Sports editor. Former Aberdeen Football Club player Joe Harper is a member of the Original sports team, adding his views to coverage of every Dons game as well as the rest of the important fixtures, and co-hosting "Original Upfront Sport" every Friday at 6pm.
Regular "what's-on" and entertainment guides are broadcast daily, complete with information features focused in and around Aberdeen and North East Scotland.
Interviews with local people, personalities from news and entertainment backgrounds, and film/theatre reviewers form a significant part of speech output.
Original 106 has associated itself with local cancer charity Friends Of Anchor, with the aim of publicising it's work and assisiting in fundraising efforts.
Original 106's managing director is Iain McKenna; the station's programme controller/senior presenter is Neil Weightman; and head of news is Neil Metcalf.
The Original 106 website features local news and weather updates, as well as an audio stream, an indicator of the current song playing and the last ten songs played. Audio and podcasts are updated daily.
