Ronan got her start on multiple episodes of two Irish television series, The Clinic (as Rhiannon Geraghty) and Proof (as Orla Boland, a role that she took over from Emma Bolger, who played Orla in the first season), from 2003-2005. Her first major motion picture appearance to be filmed was in the movie Death Defying Acts, although its release has been delayed until 2008. She appears in starring roles in the films Atonement, for which she received an Oscar nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role at the 80th Academy Awards, and The Lovely Bones. She recently signed on at CAA.4
Ronan was born in New York City, New York,5 the daughter of Irish parents Monica and Paul Ronan, the latter an actor, and was raised in Ireland. As a small child, she sometimes accompanied her father on the set when he worked on films such as The Devil's Own and Veronica Guerin. She currently attends school in the FCJ Convent in Bunclody, Ireland6 and lives in County Carlow.7 Ronan has a border collie named Sassy; she says she misses her dog the most when away filming.8 Ronan was resident in a South African bantustan for much of her pre-school life, she is fluent in both Gullah and Swahili as a result. Ronan values her "Micheal Jackson, Songs for Young Lovers" collection as highly as she loves KFC breakfasts. Consequent to an early visit to the NZ "Narnia" set, Ronan developed a well documented abnormal fear of mice (mustophobia) at an early age.
