Sky Dancers was the name of a line of toys that were popular in the mid-1990s. The toys were constructed of a pull-string base and a doll with foam wings. When the doll was inserted into the base and the string pulled, the doll would launch as a projectile, spinning its wings like a propeller as it flew. Five characters were created: Jade, Camille, Breeze, Angelica, and Slam.
The toys were launched during the 1994 Christmas and holiday season and were an instant hit. While its foam wings provided a limited amount of safety, nonetheless, there were over 100 injuries reported. Galoob, the manufacturer of the toys, recalled them permanently in June 2000 after less than six years on the market. The toys are no longer available.
The series spawned an animated television spinoff in 1996. The five characters were said to be students at the High Hopes Dance Academy under the widowed Queen Skyla. Queen Skyla and her students defended her kingdom from Skyla's jealous brother-in-law Sky Clone, who sought revenge for his brother Skyler (Skyla's husband) being selected as king over him. Sky Clone had successfully killed Skyler but was unable to gain control of the Sky Swirl Stone that gave the Sky Dancers their powers. The series ended after one season once E/I regulations took effect.
Characters
- Jade - she is a prima ballerina at high hope academy. Jade gets along with all the sky dancers, but she argues with Slam a lot, suggesting that she secretly likes him. Jade has a caring and compassionate nature this is hown through her acts of kindness through out the sky realm. Jade has a close relationship with her father as he brought her up. Her mother taught her to dance, being a ballerina herself. Her mother finally got the chance to become a professional ballerina. Unfortunately for Jade this meant that her mother would be away from home, so Jade had to learn herself to dance. Not having a mother around was very difficult for Jade and it really changed her personality, she has a very passionate side to her. Jade is very pretty she has long black hair with an orange streak up the middle which she wears in a pony tail. She has long eyelashes and big brown eyes, and red lips. She wears a short fuchsia dress and white boots as a human. As a sky dancer she has big fuchsia wings and her outfit is white and fuchsia.
- Slam - he controls the power of gravity, he seems to lack skill within dance class as he specialises in break dancing and hip hop. Slam has a reckless personality and can come across as a bit of a rebel but deep down he’s a great guy. He has a slight crush on Jade and has a love/hate relationship with her as they have two very different personalities and tastes in dance and music. Sam has spiky red hair and black and yellow wings.
- Angelica - she is a country rock dancer. She acts as a leader to the sky dancers. Angelica is very optimistic and witty. She tends to flirt with Breeze quite a bit. Angelic has Blonde hair with pink streaks. She also wears a pair of pink heart earrings. Her outfits are white and blue.
- Camille - she has a modern dancing style. She can also create any shape from clouds. Camille has light , curly brown hair that she wears in a pony tail with a blue streak up the middle.
- Breeze - he has a unique African American dancing style. He has the power of wind and nature, which is very affective against sky clones minions.
- Queen Skyla - queen of the sky kingdom she is also the dancer tutor of High hope academy.
- Sky Clone - Skyla's evil brother. He is determined to take over the sky realm and defeat the sky dancers once and for all.
- King Skyler - skyla's husband . He sacrificed himself by a death spin with sky clone in order to defeat him , unfortunately did this not actually kill him.
- Whirl and Twirl - They are Skylas faithful k9 companions, they use their ears to fly, they also help the sky dancers on their adventures.
