WCDX is a Mainstream Urban formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Mechanicsville, Virginia, serving the Richmond/Petersburg area. WCDX is owned and operated by Radio One.

History

WCDX began on 92.7 FM as a construction permit in August 1984 as WPUF, in reference to Virgnia's connection with the Tobacco industry, but those calls were never used. In late 1985, WPUF signed on as CHR WZZR / "Lazer 93".

Kid Kelly was WZZR's night jock, calling himself "Kid Crockett". He later worked On Air and became Program Director of Z100 in New York and now hosts the syndicated "Soundtraxx" radio show.

In February 1987, the station became a gold based Adult Contemporary station as WCDX, but by November of 1987, it was reborn with its urban format, though as "Power 93". It wouldn't be until Mid-1996, that WCDX would move form 92.7 to 92.1, where they went from 6000 watts to 25 thousand watts, switching their branding to "Power 92".

WCDX remained the only Urban station in Richmond until 2001, when WBTJ flipped from oldies to urban.

Branding

Currently, WCDX is using the "iPower 92-1" branding on air.

Elliot Yamin, now a singing star made famous through Fox's "American Idol" show, once worked at WCDX as an overnight Jock in the 1990s calling himself E-Dub.

Juan Conde , who later became Evening News Anchor for ABC-TV affiliate WRIC , was WCDX's morning man for most of the 1990s.
