Featured Portals in Wikipedia
A featured portal is a portal which is regarded by the community as being particularly good. This page is where featured portal candidates are considered by the community.
Please see "what is a featured portal?" for general standards and criteria.
Before nominating an article here, it is highly recommended you receive feedback from the community by listing it at portal peer review.
Nominators are expected to make an effort to address objections. A portal should not be a featured portal candidate and at the same time be listed at portal peer review. Users are asked not to add a second nomination here until the first has gained support and concerns have been substantially addressed. Do not split a nomination page into subsections, which will cause problems in its archiving (if necessary, use bolded headings). Please respond positively to constructive criticism.
For a nomination to be promoted to featured portal status, consensus must be reached that it meets the criteria. Consensus is built among the reviewers and nominators, as determined by the portal directors: Caulde, OhanaUnited and Qst. If, after sufficient time, objections considered actionable have not been resolved or consensus for promotion has not been reached, a nomination will be removed from the list and archived.
At present, there are 129 featured portals, of a total of 577 portals on Wikipedia.

Nomination procedure
- Before nominating a portal for featured portal status on this page, compare it against the featured portal criteria and ensure that it meets all criteria before nominating.
- It is strongly recommended that you use the portal peer review process before nominating the portal. Peer reviews help to identify and fix basic improvement needs before they might be used as the basis for opposing a nomination.
- You may also wish to observe other featured portals in the same topic to get ideas on how to further improve your portal before nomination.
- Place {{FPOC}} on the talk page of the nominated portal, and click the "initiate nomination" link – This will allow you to initiate the nomination in the correct format.
- Note: If you are resubmitting the portal after a previously failed nomination, it is important that you follow the following instructions correctly:
-
- Use the move tab to rename the previous nomination to a new title:
- example: move
Wikipedia:Featured portal candidates/Portal:Example to Wikipedia:Featured portal candidates/Portal:Example/Archive 1
- Go back to the template you left on the talk page of the nominated portal, and replace the code {{FPOC}} with {{FPOC|Archive 1}}. Save the page and re-click the "initiate nomination" link to start the nomination again.
- Fill in the blanks of the page, including why you are nominating the portal and other necessary details about the portal that need to be covered.
- Click this link and place the following code (replacing Example with the name of your portal) directly under the header, and above all previous nominations. This will transclude the nomination subpage you created for your nominated portal to be seen on the main candidacy page. Be sure to include an edit summary that clearly states which portal you are nominating: e.g.,
nominating Portal:Example.
- Nominator is strongly encouraged to watchlist the nomination page.
Supporting and objecting
Please read nominated portals fully before deciding to support or oppose a nomination.
- To edit nominations in order to comment on them, you must click the "edit" link to the right of the portal nomination on which you wish to comment (not the overall page's "edit this page" link).
- If you approve of a portal, write '''Support''' followed by your reasons.
- If you oppose a nomination, write '''Object''' followed by the reason for your objection. Each objection must provide a specific rationale that can be addressed. If nothing can be done in principle to "fix" the source of the objection, the objection may be ignored. This includes objections to a portal's suitability for the Wikipedia.
- To withdraw an objection, strike it out (with <s>...</s>) rather than removing it.
- Any registered user may vote. IP users will have their votes crossed out, but their comments on portal content should be considered. Users casting more than 1 vote by using alternate/different accounts will have all but their primary account's vote removed.
Consensus must be reached for a portal to be promoted to featured portal status. Consensus shall be determined by a nomination closer who is not materially involved in the portal's development or maintenance, or any related WikiProjects. If enough time passes without objections being resolved, nominations will be removed from the candidates list and archived.

Any editor in good standing is welcome to analyse consensus in a nomination, and close it accordingly. There is a group of editors who are trusted and willing to close difficult or contentious nominations in which they haven't expressed an opinion. If you would like to ask that a nomination be closed, have concerns over a closure, or seek clarification in any regard, please ask on the talk page.
- When NOT promoted, place the following at the bottom of the candidate subpage;
- {{FPORTCresult|Not promoted.|<!-- Any further comments -->}} ~~~~
- When promoted, place the following at the bottom of the candidate subpage;
- {{FPORTCresult|Promoted.|<!-- Any further comments -->}} ~~~~
- Remove the transcluded discussion from this page (click here). While removing it, mention the name of the portal in the edit summary.
- Transclude the nomination to the promoted or not promoted log, as appropriate.
- Update the Template:Featured portal log tallies by clicking here.
- Update Wikipedia:Featured portal candidates/List, which appears on Template:FPcandidates, by clicking here.
- For successful nominations:
- Replace {{FPOC}} on the portal's talk page with {{featuredportal}}
- Update Template:FPO number by clicking here.
- Add the portal to Portal:Featured portals.
- Edit Portal:Featured content/Portals. Remember to update "max" value in the "#switch:" function.
- Place bold-italics around the portal at Portal:Contents/Portals.
- Update Wikipedia:Goings-on by clicking here.
- Add {{FA}} alongside the portal at Wikipedia:Portal/Directory. Ensure the Maintainers/WikiProject information is up-to-date.

Nominations
Self-nomination. See the archived peer review, tho there was only one response. There are over 120 maps of a wide varying type, not including the ones in articles and bios. I believe this portal meets all the criteria and should be promoted. Thanks. Joe I 19:28, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- The portal could use a Things you can do section; would it also be possible to add a Did you know? section?
- Added a Geography based to do list. I looked thru lots of DYKs and didn't find a single one I wanted to use.
- Add Read more... links for that particular article/biography (Portal:Sustainable development)
- Articles are linked like the rest of wikipedia, from the first instance of the article title.
- Would it be possible to expand Portal:Atlas/Maps/Geographic and Portal:Atlas/Maps/Nautical to ten selections?
- Yeah, it took alot of looking, but I added a few, 11 geo and 10 nautical total. I will contine to try to increase these.
Overall, I think the portal looks fantastic. --Jh12 (talk) 20:18, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks. Joe I 19:41, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

- Missing: A Did you know section, for a way to format it, see Portal:Norway/DYK. Cirt (talk) 22:35, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
- Missing: A News section, and/or Events section (daily/weekly or monthly), or both. Cirt (talk) 22:35, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
- Missing: Featured content or expand to all GA and FA content box. Cirt (talk) 22:35, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
- Not meaning to sound rude, but these are not required in the criteria or guidelines so , not missing, only suggested additions. It's very difficult to find excerpts and headlines on individual maps, when they are meant for articles. All of the featured maps are in the Featured map section, therefore another featured content box would be redundant. Joe I 07:50, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- Would be really nice to have a Selected quote section, with quotes from notable individuals with existing bio articles on Wikipedia and free-use images about Atlas, maps, mapmaking, geography, or other related topics. See Portal:Comedy/Selected quote for an idea. Cirt (talk) 22:35, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
- Started a quote section. 13 there now, and I'll more soon. Joe I 07:50, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- Surely there must be some other related portals? Cirt (talk) 22:35, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
- Added one more, but that's about all I could find closely related. Joe I 07:50, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- Topics would look better if left-aligned. Cirt (talk) 22:35, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
- Is there a specific reason or merely a personal preference? Joe I 07:50, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- Support- the portals looks amazing. but can replace the title from more maps to just maps. else everything seems perfect to me. the portal is very well organized. Good work has been put up. Sushant gupta (talk) 11:41, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- Changed to Maps. Thanks 15:15, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
Self-nomination. See archived peer review. Stats: 19 selected articles, all WP:FA, 14 selected biographies, all WP:FA, 12 selected pictures, all WP:FPs, 30 sets of 3 DYKs, all had appeared previously at T:DYK, 20 selected quotes, all with free-use images. News updates with Wikinews Importer Bot (talk · contribs), and a Rotating In this month section. Things you can do has a link to a cleanup listing from WolterBot (talk · contribs), and articles with notability concerns from WP:WPNN. I believe the portal meets the standards for Featured Portal status.
Thanks to Awadewit for help with finding content and work at In this month. Cirt (talk) 08:09, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
- Support - I went ahead and italicized Selected quote; I couldn't find anything else wrong. --Jh12 (talk) 01:34, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
- Support. I'm impressed (as usual). The only thing concerning is the fact there are only 12 selected pictures - do you think you could consider increasing that to 15 or 20? Qst (talk) 18:00, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- Every single selected picture is also a Featured Picture, that way the subsection can be titled: Featured Picture. If you know of any other Featured Pictures related to theatre, let me know and I will add those into rotation as well. Cirt (talk) 20:58, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- Image:Thomas Keene in Othello 1884 Poster.JPG just passed WP:FPC. You could also consider Image:Geisha-kyoto-2004-11-21.jpg and Image:The Assassination of President Lincoln - Currier and Ives 2.png. :) Intothewoods29 (talk) 22:44, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
- Done. - Thank you for these suggestions. Cirt (talk) 12:14, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
Self-nomination. Extensive work has been carried out on this portal and I now feel that it's up to FP standards. I requested a peer review months ago but nothing came of it. The portal is quite low maintenance, with random features and Wikinews imports, all that needs to happen is a picture change once a month. After reading some other FPOCs here I'll get to work on a randomized DYK section. Many thanks, --Joowwww (talk) 16:33, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

- Selected article - Would be nice to have (at least) 10 selections here. Currently only has 9, I am sure there must be other good articles to choose from. Cirt (talk) 01:05, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Y Done 10 for the moment. --Joowwww (talk) 22:00, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
- Selected biography - Currently 8 selected, would be nice to have more. Might try reformatting both Selected article and Selected biography sections after Portal:Sustainable development. Cirt (talk) 01:05, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Self-nomination. After lots of work, it seems to me Portal:Peru is ready for a featured portal nomination. As there are very few active members at Wikipedia:WikiProject Peru, this portal is designed to be as low-maintenance as possible. It currently has 15 selected articles, 20 selected pictures and 10 DYK sets each with 5 hooks, all of which rotate randomly thanks to the {{random portal component}} template. All selected articles are either featured or good articles and all the DYK hooks are properly referenced in their linked articles. There is no selected biography component because there are very few high quality Peru-related articles at Wikipedia so it would make no sense to split them in two sections. The only portal section that requires manual updates is the Peru news section and this has been continuously and regularly updated for over a year. As for other components there's a things you can do section, a Peru topics section plus related portals and wikiprojects sections. Every now and then you might see an occasional red link, they are a reflection of the limited number of Peru-related issues currently covered at Wikipedia and an encouragement for further contribution. --Victor12 (talk) 17:18, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Comments
- The top image is a bit too self-referential for my taste, others may disagree. Cirt (talk) 17:37, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Changed banner --ErickAgain (talk) 02:30, 28 October 2008 (UTC).
- New section looks clunky, good be improved by standardizing with Wikinews Importer Bot (talk · contribs). Cirt (talk) 17:37, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Not sure what you mean here. Coverage of Peru at Wikinews is quite spotty so no point in using the Wikinews Importer Bot. Any format improvement suggestions? --Victor12 (talk) 18:28, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Wikinews Importer Bot (talk · contribs) could be used, in addition to a few chosen news events as used currently. Cirt (talk) 00:41, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- The problem with the bot is that there aren't that many news about Peru at wikinews. According to http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Portal:Peru there are only four Peru related news items for all of 2008 at wikinews so it would not be very useful to use the bot. Could you be more specific about why this section looks "clunky". --Victor12 (talk) 01:30, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- It has redlinks. It has an awkward template-link to Wikinews at the bottom, instead of a different style which might mesh better with that subsection. Cirt (talk) 22:56, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- Redlinks are there for a reason which I already explained in the first paragraph of this nomination. The purpose of this news section is not to serve as a link to Wikinews where, as I have said, coverage of Peru is virtually non-existant; the purpose is to point the reader to Peru related articles at Wikipedia. As for the template, I just changed it. Better now? --Victor12 (talk) 01:05, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
- IMO and per general consensus from previous discussion in other WP:FPORTCs - redlinks really are not appropriate on a portal's main page, except usually in the Things you can do section under WP:Requested articles. Cirt (talk) 04:06, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
- OK, no red links now. --Victor12 (talk) 16:32, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
- Category section text is a bit small, might look nicer if modeled after Portal:Sustainable development or Portal:Oregon. Cirt (talk) 17:37, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah this is a problem. I'll try to work on it. --Victor12 (talk) 18:28, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- I changed the format of this section. Does it look better? --Victor12 (talk) 18:49, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Done. Looks much better. Cirt (talk) 00:41, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- Interesting style for Things you can do - I like it. Cirt (talk) 17:37, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Did you know footer could use a link to WP:Recent additions. Cirt (talk) 17:37, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- But that link is not Peru related. --Victor12 (talk) 18:28, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, but it provides links to other Did you know hooks for those that are interested. It is a fairly common feature on other WP:FPORTs. Cirt (talk) 00:41, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- Not sure about this one. I'd like to read more comments on this issue. --Victor12 (talk) 01:30, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- Missing: - Selected biography section. Cirt (talk) 17:37, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Already explained above. --Victor12 (talk) 18:28, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Hrm, could there be some other sort of Selected section instead of biography? Perhaps cities, notable events, something like that? Cirt (talk) 00:41, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- As I said above there are not many good articles to select from, plus adding one more section would unbalance the portal. --Victor12 (talk) 01:30, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- There are always ways to work to rebalance the portal. And most WP:FPORTs do not have just one randomized Selected article section. Cirt (talk) 22:57, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- Well, there's not enough high quality content to make a new section of selected articles. A notable events section could be possible but it would take lots of work and time so if this is a major obstacle for this nomination, then the portal should be failed until such work is done. --Victor12 (talk) 01:05, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, this is a good idea - it's not as good as just adding some other sort of "Selected content" section, but it would help. Good models are at WP:FPORTs: Biography, Religion, War, Holidays and Oregon. The portal just looks lacking/deficient with only the one Selected content section. Cirt (talk) 04:08, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
- Added a Selected anniversaries section "In this month" --ErickAgain (talk) 15:49, 28 October 2008 (UTC).
- Added another selected article section "Selected battle" reflecting the turbulent history of Peru --ErickAgain (talk) 21:26, 30 October 2008 (UTC).
- Would look nice with a Selected quotes section, Portal:Sustainable development has a nice model to use. Cirt (talk) 17:37, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- We had one such section but it had only two quotes, one of them not very relevant, so I removed it. A further problem with such a section is the need for reliable translations as most Peru related quotes are in Spanish. --Victor12 (talk) 18:28, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- I am sure that you could find plenty of quotes in secondary sources if you give it a try, however this is generally an optional section and just a suggestion. Cirt (talk) 00:41, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- Selected picture - missing roll-over caption on the images. Cirt (talk) 17:37, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Wouldn't this be redundant? I mean the picture already has a caption beneath it. See Today's featured picture at Wikipedia's main page, it has no roll-over caption, just the name of the pic file. --Victor12 (talk) 18:28, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Again, this is a common feature on WP:FPORTs, and it looks better to have a rollover caption then something.jpg when the mouse moves over the image. Cirt (talk) 00:41, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- Fair enough. Just added captions for all pics. --Victor12 (talk) 01:30, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- Done. Thank you, Cirt (talk) 22:58, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- Peru topics - better to subst the template instead, and then reformat the entries, for example see Portal:Education. Cirt (talk) 17:37, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Hmmm... the thing is the topics template is subject to changes so I think it is better to transclude to have it synchronized with articles such as Peru, which feature the {{Peru topics/Content}} template. --Victor12 (talk) 18:28, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yes but it looks quite odd with the current formatting/style. Best if someone associated with the portal were to keep on top of the changes and change the Topics subpage accordingly. Or better yet, choose the most important topic links and include those in the subpage, and begin to differentiate from the template. Cirt (talk) 00:41, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- Does it look odd? How so? Maybe I've been staring to much at this portal to have an unbiased opinion, ;-) --Victor12 (talk) 01:30, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- Well for one thing the color scheme of the template does not jive with the portal itself. Cirt (talk) 22:59, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- I see what you mean. I'll try to work on this. --Victor12 (talk) 01:05, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
- Did some work on this. --ErickAgain (talk) 17:34, 8 September 2008 (UTC).

- There were some minor additions, probably optional, that I think would be nice:
- A clearly visible Show new selections button to purge the cache like Portal:Criminal justice
- OK, agree and added, seems to be de facto standard on many featured portals. --ErickAgain (talk) 17:32, 30 September 2008 (UTC).
- Image captions for Selected article and Did you know...
- Added captions --ErickAgain (talk) 10:37, 30 September 2008 (UTC).
- A More link for that particular article/picture on Selected article and Selected picture like Portal:Criminal justice
- Added (more...) link to abstract of selected pictures and articles like in the intro. Not to the footer of the box. --ErickAgain (talk) 19:58, 30 September 2008 (UTC).
- I also think a link to Wikipedia:Recent additions on Did you know... might be a nice touch.
- Making all the box titles either italicized or not italicized.
- Made all headers italic except the main portal header as on the featured Cuba portal --ErickAgain (talk) 10:44, 30 September 2008 (UTC).
- Image mapping the icons under Related portals to the respective portals: see Portal:Schools/Related portals Thanks, --Jh12 (talk) 09:42, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
- Great solution. Made it so, idem for Wiki projects --ErickAgain (talk) 11:11, 30 September 2008 (UTC).

- Many thanks for the quick responses. If all of Cirt's issues can be resolved, this portal has my full support. I agree that one more box would be nice, either a Selected biography or the Notable events/In this month section. Some other issues include the cleanup of Peru news (perhaps removing the redlinks and some of the extra whitespace between the news and footer), and possibly the additional of the Recent additions link and Selected quotes. --Jh12 (talk) 18:23, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
- No red links or extra whitespace in the News section now. --Victor12 (talk) 03:34, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

- Support - With the addition of the anniversaries section and fixes overall, I believe this portal has reached featured status. --Jh12 (talk) 22:04, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
After receiving enthusiastic comments and running out of ideas, I've decided to nominate the Schools Portal for featured status. Many thanks, --Jh12 (talk) 18:35, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- Comment. Some of the selected pictures need to be reduced in size to fit properly in the box. RichardF (talk) 19:11, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- What screen resolution and browser are you using? --Jh12 (talk) 19:31, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
-
- 1024X768 using IE7. RichardF (talk) 20:07, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks. I'll make sure to continue checking on on IE7 as well. --Jh12 (talk) 20:14, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- I've reduced the images by about half. I've been checking the portal on Windows XP with Firefox 3.0.1 and Internet Explorer 7 on a 1024x768 screen resolution so I apologize if I messed up on the image sizes. --Jh12 (talk) 20:03, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- Portal:Schools/Selected picture/Layout is set to width=200px. Portal:Education/Selected picture/Layout is set to width=300px. That seems to work just fine, as long as the frame is taken into account as well. RichardF (talk) 20:15, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- I've changed the schools layout width to 300px. --Jh12 (talk) 20:27, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- The individual "size=" values seem to be set on the individual pages. These will override the default. You might want to remove those in some cases. RichardF (talk) 20:32, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not sure if it makes any sense, but I removed the forced pixel size for basically all the images unless their height was significantly greater than their width. --Jh12 (talk) 20:57, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, default for "landscape" and custom for "portrait." :-) RichardF (talk) 21:28, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- Questions. Why is no selected biography section included? Why is no events-related section (e.g., news &/or anniversaries) included? RichardF (talk) 21:37, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- The schools project doesn't actually handle educators, only primary and secondary schools. I'm not sure about the news section. We're a child of the education project, and school-issues are merged with that subject. Would another project have to be set up at Wikinews, or a department at Wikiproject Schools? I have to admit, we can't even get enough editors for proper collaboration efforts. But the idea for school events/news is a good one. --Jh12 (talk) 22:22, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- No project is necessary to create a portal. It just makes sense to coordinate efforts, when applicable. That gets to a question I almost asked before you changed the topics section from education to schools articles, for the most part. Many links still relate to education, rather than schools, such as in the projects section and Wikimedia section. So the question is, to what extent is the content at Portal:Schools intended to be distinct from that at Portal:Education? In this case, I personally consider any biographies and events with clear connections to specific schools as fair game. Otherwise, this might as well be a subportal of Portal:Architecture. RichardF (talk) 23:44, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- Wow, that's an excellent question. It goes to the root of what Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools is, which is a project about individual primary and secondary schools: their history, curriculum, extracurricular activities, and a list of notable alumni. WikiProject Education and its portal is not supposed to cover individual schools but rather the concept of schools, universities, and education in general. This project also covers school districts, athletic conferences/associations, and school organizations. Partly due to a lack of participation at WP:Education and because the topics and issues are inter-related, WikiProject schools has adopted some articles (Secondary school is now covered by both projects). Strictly speaking, however, this portal is designed to cover any school that is not post-secondary. That's what the project is focused on, and there are over 130,000 of them just in the United States.[1] I thought the additional links to education topics were relevant because they are pretty closely related. But if there's confusion or too much overlap with education, I could remove them: previously the only links were for WP:Schools and WP:Education. --Jh12 (talk) 00:24, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
- Portals and projects are not the same, and there is no requirement a portal covers the same scope of any particular project. In fact, most portals span the scopes of more than one project. I believe one implication of your comments is that this portal should include content with clear connections to specific schools or "their history, curriculum, extracurricular activities, and ... notable alumni." From that perspective, it sounds like a selected biography section should be included. Notable school-realted events, current & historical, should be included as well.
- Biography I'm still unsure about; I feel like educators on their own are notable not because of their work at a specific school, but because of their work for education in general. The same goes for alumni. The school is famous for having the alumni, but the alumni aren't famous because they were at the school in and of itself. School-related events I can definitely see. I would imagine such a section would include articles like the Little Rock Nine, the Red Guards (China), the Columbine High School massacre, and the Jena Six. I guess the original thought was to keep the portal simple; it's the wpschool portal and that's who maintains it. But from what I'm getting, the schools portal is supposed to stretch out into education, sociology, criminology, and more. Gosh, I guess it's not quite at featured status after all

- There certainly are notable educators associated with schools, e.g., Erin Gruwell and Joe Louis Clark. The question is more about whether any such articles are good enough to include in the portal. Also, a limited scope portal is fine, just don't expect it to make featured status. RichardF (talk) 01:59, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
- I guess I was actually hoping to focus people's attention on the countless Wikipedia school articles. Perhaps that's too narrow-minded, or part of a pipe dream that more people will join the chronically understaffed schools project. --Jh12 (talk) 04:59, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
- I still have mixed feelings about expanding the scope of this portal, given that WikiProject Schools already covers the complexities of over 21,000+ distinct school articles, almost seven times as many articles as WikiProject Education. Nevertheless, I would like to know how exactly one sets up WikiNews for schools, or would it be better to have a selected anniversary or events section? --Jh12 (talk) 23:26, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
- What I've been suggesting doesn't involve expanding the scope of the portal, just adding sections within the existing scope. An automated WikiNews feed wouldn't work because it doesn't have a schools category. Any additions of news items from here or there would have to be selected manually. Doing something like "In this month," like at Portal:Oregon probably is more doable. RichardF (talk) 02:27, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
- Per the suggestions, I've added a biography section (currently with 11 biographies) and an "In this month" section. I tried to go through every day of the year starting with January 1 and every WPSchool article rated Top and most rated High for additional events. Each month currently has at least three events; I'm hoping people see my messages at the WPSchool, Australia, and Canada education projects and throw in some more ideas. Although I was reluctant to add the sections at first, I think the portal does look pretty nice and more filled out with them. --Jh12 (talk) 02:33, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
- Now at 24 articles, 22 pictures, 19x3 DYK, and 16 biographies. --Jh12 (talk) 19:54, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

- Selected biography - section could use 3 or more selections added into rotation. Cirt (talk) 19:17, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Selected picture - a majority of the credits could use wikilinks to the relevant userpages or external links to the relevant party credited. Cirt (talk) 19:17, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Y Done I hope. Unfortunately, some of these users have apparently left Wikipedia, but I have credited and linked their user names as the image tags indicated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jh12 (talk • contribs)
- Please do not mark things with {{done}} - usually in WP:FACs that it is left to the commenter, not the nominator, to signify if something has been sufficiently addressed. (Though they don't use the {{done}} icon over there anymore but just the bolded word Done.) As for this particular point some of the credits are redlinks - in some cases to turn them blue you might be able to link to the users' talk pages instead of userpages if they don't have a userpage. Cirt (talk) 06:19, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
- I converted all the redlinks I could to the talk pages. --Jh12 (talk) 21:04, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
- Things you can do - looks a bit clunky with everything pushed to the left side like that, take a look at Portal:Sustainable development for a good model. Cirt (talk) 19:17, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

N Not done - Still some issues with a big block of space at the top after the first line, and the italicized portion at the bottom - if that is inactive, why mention it? Seems like something more for a WikiProject page instead. Cirt (talk) 06:22, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
- I removed the inactive school watch and reduced the size of the section. --Jh12 (talk) 21:04, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
- Wikiversity - Not really sure this needs it own subsection, for one it is so small, and second it is a dup to the Associated Wikimedia section. Cirt (talk) 19:17, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not sure it does either. It's a legacy from an older version of the portal. If it becomes an issue, I'll drop it down into associated wikimedia. --Jh12 (talk) 20:21, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- That would be best, IMO. Looks a bit self-referential and I think it would be better off in Associated Wikimedia and not as its own subsection. Cirt (talk) 06:22, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
- The section has been removed. --Jh12 (talk) 21:04, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
- Selected anniversaries - Missing a whole bunch of sections (including August), and lots of redlinks. This should be addressed. Cirt (talk) 19:17, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, I just started adding the anniversaries and biographies two days ago per the comments above. I've been recruiting for help at WikiProject Schools, but we haven't come up with anything for August yet. --Jh12 (talk) 20:21, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- I do apologize for taking so long with the anniversaries. I have upgraded the number of biographies to 10, but it's slow going finding stuff to place in the anniversaries section. --Jh12 (talk) 12:37, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
- Still a work in progress. I'll be asking for input at other WikiProjects. Were there other areas on Wikipedia where I could canvass for additional ideas? --Jh12 (talk) 21:04, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
- Related portals - I'd imagine there must be a few more related portals that could go in there. Cirt (talk) 19:17, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Added a few more portals. Please let me know if it needs even more. --Jh12 (talk) 20:21, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Looks great. Cirt (talk) 06:24, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
- Optional - a Selected quote section like at Portal:Sustainable development would be a nice addition to the portal. Cirt (talk) 19:17, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

- Support. My thanks to Jh12 (talk · contribs) for the excellent work in addressing the points I raised above. The only things left to do are to fill in the missing sections at Portal:Schools/Selected anniversaries and fill out those other months where there are only a few dates listed. Also, it would not hurt to add a randomized Selected quote section like at Portal:Sustainable development, but this is certainly not necessary for WP:FPORT status, IMO.
